Western Cape Police Commissioner, Mzwandile Petros has briefed the media on Crime statistics and trends in the Province.
Petros unpacked the statistics, following the release of National Crime statistics earlier this week in Pretoria.
There was a slight drop in the number of murders in the Western Cape in the 2007/8 financial year from 2881 the previous year to 2836. The Nyanga policing precint accounted for the bulk of those, but also recorded the highest number of murders in the country for a third year running.
Petros told the media briefing though that the figures MUST be viewed taking into account a number of factors.

Charles Nqakula released the year to dates’ crime statistics for South Africa. The statistics appear to a be a mixed bag. Mike Wills interviewed EWN Reporter, Sheldon Morais on comments made by Nqakula about the statistics.

Mike Wills interviewed Dr Johan Burger, Senior Researcher in the Crime Institute for Security Studies, who said the statistics are better than he personally expected. He added that there is an overall positive feeling about the statistics and that we would need about 10 to 12 years to reach an internationally comparable level.
