Prasa Afro 4000 locomotives only approved on select lines, says rail regulator

The Railway Safety Regulator South Africa has conformed that the controversial Afro 4000 locomotives can only be approved on some railway lines.

CEO Nkululeko Poya said hey are at times too high for South Africa’s railway network, but can run on select railway lines in the Northern Cape, Free State and Eastern Cape.

Poya said the locomotives can operate on the conditions that there are adequate processes to assess the tunnel tests, cabin layout and maintenance arrangements.

At this stage, we are not comfortable to let them run in other provinces... as South Africa does not have a homogeneous rail network.
