Know your internationally-recognised Blue Flag beaches

Six new South African beaches have achieved the 2015/2016 Blue Flag status for meeting an international standard of excellence in safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental information and environmental management.

Hobie beach in Nelson Mandela Metro, Hamburg beach in Amatole, Struisbaai beach in Cape Agulhas, Heberdine beach in Hibiscus Coast, Ushaka and Westbrook beaches in Ethekwini are part of the 39 beaches that have achieved full status.

People are starting to realise safe and clean beaches that have services available to look after them, and a good environment

Vincent Shacks, Blue Flag Programme Leader

In South Africa, the Blue Flag programme is managed by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) and participating local authorities. The strict criteria of the programme is set by the international coordinators of the Blue Flag campaign in Europe, the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education).

South Africa joined in 2001 and was the first country outside Europe to be granted Blue Flag accreditation for its beaches.
