Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is the most powerful person in South Africa, according to famed political journalist and author John Matisonn.
Matisonn called Gordhan “a patriot with integrity, and a strategist” in a recent Daily Maverick article.
According to Matisonn, there were limits to how far Gordhan could stand up to Zuma’s spending during his first stint as Finance Minister.
“Now he need give less ground,” said Matisonn.
“Restoring the constitution and saving South Africa from a downgrade to junk status will be hard and back-breaking work… Gordhan's appointment brought it into the realm of possibility.”
The Afternoon Drive’s John Maytham interviewed Matisonn.
