ANC's birthday ban on Carien du Plessis 'extreme', says Sanef

The South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) has urged journalists to tread carefully when exercising freedom of speech.

At the same time, forum chair Mpumelelo Mkhabela says the ANC's decision to ban Carien du Plessis from covering its 104th birthday celebrations, over her controversial tweet, is taking it to the extreme.

Mkhabela on Friday said that the party was rightfully offended after du Plessis posted a tweet describing people who'd attend the ANC bash as ‘pantypreneurs’ and ‘tenderpreneurs’, but said the santion was an "extreme measure".

Listen to the full conversation:

Where people have erred, it is important that they apologise and make amends, as in the case of Andrew Barnes. We welcome that.

Mpumelelo Mkhabela, Sanef Chairperson

We think the ANC could have done better and they could have risen above the comments. They should accept people like her and those with differing opinions.

Mpumelelo Mkhabela, Sanef Chairperson

We must distinguish between offensive language and people being offended, because people can be offended by anything under the sun.

Mpumelelo Mkhabela, Sanef Chairperson

The offence that Carien du Plessis committed doesn't warrant the kind of sanctions taken by the ANC.
