Is Cloud Seeding viable for South Africa?

8 January 2016 5:20 PM

Cloud seeding was done in South Africa until 2001. With the unavailability of rain, will cloud seeding be a viable idea for SA?

The scarcity of rain in South Africa has prompted SA Weather services to look into the concept of cloud-seeding.

Cloud Seeding - The hygroscopic material is dispersed onto clouds by airplanes so that condensation is accelerated to the point that artificial rain occurs.

Nico Kroese, Manager of Prediction Research at SA Weather Services says that cloud seeding was done in South Africa till about 2001.

Listen to the full conversation below:

He says that the results were positive. The increase in the amount of rainfall was ranging from 30 to 60 percent from the clouds that were seeded.

According to Kroese, the project was discontinued because the Department of Water Affairs at that time had other priorities to focus on.
