SA experiencing its lowest rainfall since 1960!

South Africa is reported to be receiving the lowest recorded rainfall in 55 years, with the drought last year reducing harvest by a third to 9.94 million tonnes, the lowest since 2007.

Stephen Grootes on Thursday spoke to Professor Mary Scholes, the head of the South African climate leadership programme at Wits University, about what this means for further dry conditions and food security in the country.

We were hoping that the El Niño would switch back to the old predictability patterns it used to have. We'll have to work with this degree of uncertainty and find ways to reduce the risk, especially to food security.
