SABC reports R411 million loss and ANC says Motsoeneng should go

CEO of the SABC, James Aguma, presented the public broadcasters financial results on Thursday.

He announced a loss of R411-million for the 2015/16 financial year.

According to Gia Niccolaides, EWN reporter, Aguma said the biggest contributor to the loss was on expenditures incurred on unforeseen events of national interest.

He also said there was a lot of pre-planning for he local government election which they didn't get funding for.

Aguma also said that the public broadcaster get less than 3% in government funding and they cannot rely on advertising revenue for news

Aguma said that numbers presented today does not show that the SABC is not insolvent, creditors and employers have been paid...

He suggested that perhaps R411 is not as bad as people have expected taking into considering the economic slow down.

Meanwhile, ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu says Motsoeneng's appointment is illegal and he should be removed from his position.

Mthembu said that the developments at the public broadcaster were causing the country serious embarrassment.

Sekotloane Phamodi, Coordinator Save our SABC, says he is not holding his breath and doesn't think that Motsoeneng will be removed.

He says over the years there have been many irregularities at the public broadcaster and Parliament has never intervened.
