'Autism affects more boys than girls'

The Department of Education launched the first autism special school in Gauteng this week, aiming to cater for the needs of children affected by autism.

Weekend Breakfast's Sam Cowen and Africa Melane spoke to Sandy Usswald, National Director, Autism SA, about this mental condition and the signs that parents need to look out for.

You can't see by looking at somebody that they are affected by autism.

Autism lasts until adulthood. It doesn't disappear or get cured.

What's often put on to the family is blame on the parents, especially in our very rural areas, it's said to be a punishment for some wrong doing of the parents or possession by demons. It's really frightening. And some of the abuse that then results from those kinds of beliefs are just terrifying.
