'Signs of life' as rescue teams establish communication with trapped miners

Dozens of workers were trapped underground following a cave in at the Lily Gold Mine near Barberton.

Vantage Goldfields' Mike Begg says audio communication has now been established with what is believed to be the three remaining miners.

According to Bregg, rescue teams have tracked measured responses at defined intervals, indicating a sign of life.

Listen to the full conversation from The Midday Report with Stephen Grootes:

It gives us great hope and joy that there is definitely someone alive in that metal container.

The lamp-room plummeted down into the collapse and has been completely surrounded by rock.

Mike Begg, Operations director of Vantage Goldfields Limited

We have to remove the rock from underground and knowing that there is someone in that box responding to us has given the team an adrenaline pump to end this rescue mission.
