How will Zuma restore confidence in the economy (and mend fences with SA Inc.)?

As President Jacob Zuma prepares to deliver his State of the Nation Address, analysts warn he will have a tough time regaining the confidence of SA Inc.

Economist at Pan African Investment and Research Services Iraj Abedian says the president has lost the business community’s trust.

The best he can hope for is to build trust again because, quite frankly, unless he establishes some credibility again in terms of consistency, nobody in business can take him seriously and have a rapport with him.

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) chief whip Narend Singh says he expects disruptions before Zuma delivers his speech, but believes he must be heard.

We expect of him to talk on behalf of government mainly on issues such as the high rate of unemployment, particularly among the youth. We expect him to deal with the economy of the country which is in dire stress.

Singh says the drought is just one of the country’s problems that needs solving.

There is no point in him coming there and telling us what the problem is. We all know what the problem is. But how is his government, utilising the existing budget, going to address some of the crises that we are facing?

We’re also expecting him to make pronouncements of how we’re going to deal with the problems that the students are facing and the problem of the drought, by making practical suggestions and implementable delivery points.
