32 000 mining jobs at risk as mining industry proves unprofitable

The Chamber of Mines says the industry is shedding jobs, with 80% of the local operations currently unprofitable.

The Department of Mineral Resources expects the industry to shed 32 000 jobs soon. The South African mining industry once dominated the world, but now accounts for about 4% of trade, down from 47% in 1980 and 18% in 2000.

Ray White on Monday spoke to mining analyst Mamokgethi Molopyane about this worrying trend.
