'Due process must be followed in school closures'

Officials need to follow due process to ensure that schools are closed without causing anger among communities.

702/Cape Talk's Reid Tlhabi on Monday spoke to attorney at Equal Education, Solminic Joseph, and national spokesperson for the basic education department, Elijah Mhlanga, regarding the issue.

Listen to the conversation below:

A whole lot of factors go into the thought process leading to the decision to either merge or close down the school.

Elijah Mhlanga, Department of Basic Education spokesperson

It is the process by way of closing of schools that causes some destruction and concern for communities.

Solminic Joseph, Equal Education attorney

...This matter needs to be treated with sensitivity because you're dealing with people's lives here.

Elijah Mhlanga, Department of Basic Education spokesperson

For us, it is encouraging to hear from the national department that these people are not following the law and have to take account for that. But how they do that is something we want to engage further.

Solminic Joseph, Equal Education attorney
