Whatever happened to plans of having a unified emergency number in SA?

For a very long time Former head at the Department of Health, Dr Cleeve Robertson has been fighting that a central emergency number be set up in order to have an efficient emergency call system.

According Dr Robertson to a central emergency number would save a lot of lives.

Time delay is the key issue… you lose between 30 to 40 minutes on every call as that call bounces around looking for the right emergency service to respond

I think this a national issues, therefore a political issue, and needs to lie with political decision makers at the highest level … perhaps the value system isn’t there.

We put this in the letter to the Minister of Communication and the response was ‘the money that was allocated for the 112 national emergency number has been allocated for the roll-out of digital television’, and that’s it.
