Why did Chris Hani's killer get parole?

Janusz Walus's lawyer thinks its about time his client got the parole he deserved after serving 20 years of his life sentence. The SACP strongly disagrees. Listen to these two opposing views.

The fact of the matter is he qualifies for release. He meets the departments own guidelines. he South African penal system recognises release on parole for any crime as long as you don't pose a danger to society if you are released

Julian Knight, Janusz Walus's lawyer

Knight says Walus has served 20 years of his life sentence. He was in fact eligible for parole after he had served 15 years. But he was refused parole at the time.

The Minister's refusal was unreasonable and reviewable.

The lawyer says Walus's treatment was political.

It was because of who he was and what he did and who he killed.

Julian Knight, Janusz Walus's lawyer

I think Walus should be reincorporated into society in the spirit of ubuntu which is part of the principles of our constitutional dispensation.

SACP's Solly Mapaila says his party vehemently disagrees with the argument for Walus's parole and the judge's decision.

We are definitely appalled and disappointed by the ruling because the judge created an impression that parole is a right when actually it is a privilege and should be granted to inmates who have shown remorse. In this case Walus did not show any remorse.
