How a cat with a frown earned its owner over R1 billion, or did it?

Tardar Sauce is a regular cat that has a rare form of feline dwarfism which accounts for her small size and expression which earned her the name Grumpy Cat.

Grumpy Cat was "discovered" after her owner Tabatha Bundesen's brother Bryan posted a picture to a social news site. It did not take long for some to say the image was doctored and others to come up with the name Grumpy.

Some videos to show it was a real cat were posted to YouTube and the sensation was born. That video has over 17 million views.

It may have remained that way with little real financial gain, but an internet meme talent agent - one of the world's newest career types - called Ben Lashes began negotiating deals for Tabatha and Tardar Sauce that has reportedly resulted in over R1 billion in revenues from products, endorsements, videos and appearances.

To earn that amount though would make a grumpy cat one of the highest earning "individuals" on the planet, so some started looking for some verification after the original Daily Express story which used the big number but not the background on how all that cash was made.

When owner Tabatha Bundesen was contacted by Huffington Post she said the amount was incorrect, with no word about what the actual amount is.

So while Tardar Sauce is one of the highest earning moggies around, she is not ready to top the celebrity earning tables just yet.

Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever is on DStv channel 131 on Weds 24 December at 9:35pm.
