The Health Department will start providing antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to people at risk of contracting HIV.
HIV clinician Dr Ntlotleng Mabena explains that although the drug is highly effective in reducing the risk of contracting HIV, it will only work if people take the medication as instructed.
Studies have shown that high-risk groups, such as men who have sex with men (MSM) and sex workers, have a decreased risk of about 90% when using the ARVs as a preventative measure.— Dr Ntlotleng Mabena, HIV clinician
Mabena says the medication needs to be supported by regular counselling, while the pills should be take consistently everyday during the period of high risk.
