Leslie Sedibe 'paying the price' for negligence, says football commentator

Former South African Football Association (Safa) CEO Leslie Sedibe has questioned the fairness and independence of the probe which led to his five year ban from the football body Fifa.

Sedibe has been banned for match-fixing and unethical behaviour relating to three international friendlies in the run up to the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Football commentator Mark Gleeson says Sedibe's response is deflecting from his negligence and responsibility in the case.

The real reason he was given the ban is that he allowed on his watch for this corruption to happen right under his nose.

Mark Gleeson, journalist and football commentator

According to Gleeson, Sedibe neglected his duties and was naive and careless for allowing a deal with the match-fixing company which arranged favourable fixtures and referees.

There is very clear evidence of fraud and corruption in the saga. I don't think Sedibe was involved in any criminal activity, but... as the CEO of Safa, he allowed, had meetings and signed off on agreements with the Singaporean match-fixing company.

Mark Gleeson, journalist and football commentator
