Zabalaza Theatre Festival takes SA's theatre production to the next level

The annual Baxter Zabalaza Theatre Festival is already underway at the Baxter and will be running until the March 18th. The Festival showcases a variety of shows from all over the Western Cape with an award ceremony on the last day of the festival.

A production that walks away with an award is also given an opportunity of showcasing at the Baxter later in the year.

According to Thami Mbongo, the Artistic Director of the Zabalaza Theatre Festival, the festival offers opportunity to shine to communities that often don’t get a chance to showcase their talent.

Listen to the full conversation below:

Mbongo explained the nominations process to Pippa Hudson saying that at the beginning an invite is sent to everyone to apply, there after the Zabalaza team spends about 3 months visiting the productions.

Some of the productions, which participated in the first round, get invited to perform at a Mini festival organized by the Zabalaza team. After the Mini Festival, some productions get nominated for the main Zabalaza festival.

Most of the time we encourage people to write new productions that have never been performed anywhere
