Standard Bank economist Chris Hart has resigned.

On 3 January the bank suspended Hart pending an inquiry into a racist tweet.

Hart tweeted that: “More than 25 years after Apartheid ended, the victims are increasing along with a sense of entitlement and hatred towards minorities…”

On 4 January the bank distanced itself from the comments made by Hart.

Standard Bank's Chief Executive Officer Sim Tshabalala sent the following note to staff, which was published in the Rand Daily Mail”:

Black South Africans are in fact fully entitled to a decent quality of life and to redress for Apartheid. To suggest that this means that they are ‘entitled’ in the negative sense is simply wrong and often amounts to racism.
