Hawks could've kept Gordhan probe out the public eye - Godongwana

The Hawks have threatened to use their constitutional powers to compel Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan to answer questions about an alleged 'rogue unit' at the South African Revenue Service (Sars).

Gordhan claims the Hawks are leaking written information to malign him, insisting that he's missed no deadline to answer the questions they sent him.

The ANC's Enoch Godongwana says the Hawks could have handled the matter differently and dealt with it in a more discreet manner.

There's no doubt. Even the timing of the issue of the 27 questions, and subsequent ultimatums - playing that in the public space is not helpful.

'If this matter is still at an investigation stage, it should have been handled with the care it deserves. Especially, considering the implication it might have on the economy.
