Are you a prawn eater? Maybe its time you think twice about eating prawns

A Columnist for the Times Newspaper, Andrea Burgner urges sea food lovers to say ‘no to prawns’ due to environmental degradation caused by prawn farming.

Speaking to CapeTalk’s John Maytham, Burgner explained that prawn farming kills marine life because of the massive nets that are dragged on the seabed, damaging it and degrading the water around them.

She says while the farming of prawns is in process there is also an enormous amount of bycatch.

The bycatch can range from 5 percent to 90 percent and that means along with the prawns they are catching marine birds, turtles and dolphins … which are normally thrown out
