Ramaphosa appeals to black intelligencia for help, says professor

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa says the African National Congress (ANC) is not for sale.

Addressing a summit of professionals and academics, he gave assurances that the ruling party is investigating allegations of state capture by the controversial Gupta family.

Independent political researcher, Tinyiko Maluleke says Ramaphosa's speech is significant because it presents the party's stance on state capture and corruption.

It was an important speech. I haven't heard Ramaphosa, or the ANC for that matter, speak that clearly about this issue of state capture, corruption and what the party plans to do.

Professor Tinyiko Maluleke, independent political researcher

According to Maluleke, Ramaphosa's comments are a strong appeal for help from South Africa's intelligencia.

I think it's a back-handed admission that the ANC might be losing the support of professionals and intellectuals... The ANC knows it would be costly to lose the support of the thinking, educated black intelligencia.

Professor Tinyiko Maluleke, independent political researcher
