Meet the first South African chef to receive a Michelin star

SA born chef, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen is the first South African to receive a coveted Michelin star for his restaurant JAN.

Earlier this year, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen received an award for his restaurant JAN, which is situated on the French Riviera. Van der Westhuizen became the first South African chef ever to receive a coveted Michelin star.

The Middleburg born chef is currently in the country to launch his new cookbook JAN – A Breath of French Air.

In 2013, van der Westhuizen opened his own restaurant in Nice called Restaurant JAN.

From the first day you start at chef school this is the only thing people talk about, Michelin, so to go out and receive this from the Oscar’s of the food industry is pretty awesome.

My grandmother’s souskluitjies (cinnamon dumplings) was my favourite and I still can’t do it the same way she did it and my mom’s pannekoek (pancake).
