Maria Ramos makes Fortune's Most Powerful Women list

This year, Fortune magazine has ranked the 50 Most Powerful Women based outside the U.S. The list spans 19 countries and is comprised of 16% new names.

"They are the smartest and toughest female business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, scientists, philanthropists and CEOs making their mark in the world today."

Fortune Magazine

The annual list is based on four metrics: money (either net worth, company revenues, or GDP); media presence; spheres of influence; and impact, analyzed both within the context of each woman’s field (media, technology, business, philanthropy, politics, and finance) and outside of it.

Despite trying local conditions and a change in strategy for business on the continent, the 57-year-old Barclays Africa Group CEO, Maria Ramos, ranked an impressive 20th on the list.

Ramos' career has had a number of notable turns - as an economist she served in the government of Nelson Mandela and later contributed to South Africa’s budgeting process and several public finance laws - despite humble beginnings.

“My dream was never to be a Chief Executive, my dream was to get an education.”

Banco Santander group executive chairman Ana Botín is in the number one spot for the second year, in a time of economic and political volatility worldwide.

As one of the most powerful figures in local business, Ramos was interviewed by Nikiwe Bikitsha for the popular Nashua sponsored podcast series Face to Face with Success...

“For me life is always about the excitement of learning and the excitement of being around people I can learn from.”
