All they can do is assess the judgement and decide of it is serious enough and urgent enough a matter to call a special meeting of the National Executive Committee.

The NEC does have powers of recall as seen in the precedent set with former President Thabo Mbeki.

But now some former MK commanders are calling for a special conference of the ANC.

That would have the power to remove President Jacob Zuma as leader of the ANC, which is a separate thing. Although the NEC can only remove him from his position in the State, but this is a different call to remove him as ANC leader because of reputational damage he has caused the organisation.

But, says Munusammy, Zuma may argue he did not act alone.

He does have a strategy behind him to survive this.
