A staff room conversation left John Maytham puzzled to discover that black children who are working and earning a decent salary do not pay rent while white children do.
According to John, his son who is staying in a property owned by he and his wife, pays them rent on a monthly basis.
He asked CapeTalk listeners to share their views on this topic and it turns out that according to those who called in to the show, it does seem that black parents don't make their kids pay rent while staying at home, but as soon as a white child turns 18 and has a job parents demand rent.

I think it’s definitely a white thing that people would stay at home and pay their parents rent. I am Muslim and I never paid anything but I think it stops with me, I would definitely charge my kids rent to stay at home. It will make them a bit independent.— Saffy caller from Eesteriver
My parents looked at me like I was completely nuts when I offered to pay rent and in the end we had to settle on me buying groceries just to settle the score.— Michael, caller from Parklands
