The City of Cape Town has tested gunfire detecting technology that allows law enforcement to respond more rapidly to gang violence.
Piloted in Hanover Park, the ShotSpotter solution has helped Metro Police attend to more incidents and remove more illegal firearms.
The City's JP Smith says the technology will be broadly rolled out in June, following the impressive results of the pilot project.
With ShotSpotter, Metro Police could get to a situation where they are responding to near every gunshot. This means more guns are taken off the streets.— JP Smith, MayCo Member for Safety and Security
Smith says that the technology has helped seize the same amount of guns in five months that police had previously done in five years.
