Former Taliban ambassador and Guantanamo Bay detainee tells his story

Aubrey Masango had a conversation with Sheik Abdul Salam Zaeef, former Taliban ambassador and Guantanamo Bay detainee, and Asim Qureshi, research director at CAGE.

The conversation follows the recent suicide bombing in Lahore, Pakistan, which killed more than 72 people last month. A group affiliated with Pakistan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

CAGE brought Sheik Abdul Salam Zaeef to come tell his story in South Africa as part of their mission to 'empower communities impacted by the War on Terror'.

CAGE started in 2003 very much as a response to Guantanamo Bay. We saw that people being detained without charge or trial, that they were being subjected to a manner of torture and we felt that it was important that there was a number of voices that were speaking out against these things or reminding people of the role of law and advocating for the rights of these detainees. We felt that part of that is important to a have humanization process, to talk about these things outside polemics where everybody just wants to use the words terrorists and extremists. One of the reasons why we’re asking Sheik to tell his story is because we want people to understand there are complexities to all of this. And, that actually if we want to have a safer world, we want to have dialogues, that’s the only way you can achieve peace alternately.

Asim Qureshi, research director, CAGE

Aubrey asked Sheik Abdul Salam Zaeef if naming Taliban an Islamic fundamentalist terrorist organisation is true, and if it's fair to the religion.

I don't think that the Taliban did anything against United States.
