How to deal with and overcome childhood trauma as an adult

Last week Dr Eve spoke to CapeTalk/702’s Redi Tlhabi about Developmental Trauma Disorder - traumatic childhood experiences that could affect relationships later in life, especially romantic ones.

During the show, a caller named Patrick called in to share his heartbreaking experience. Patrick was sexually abused by his uncle, a respected member of the community, when he was a young child.

As a result Patrick suffered a severe trauma and feared for the safety of his younger brother. Patrick was referred to a health specialist by Dr Eve to help him deal with the pains of his childhood trauma.

It’s now a week after Patrick spoke to Dr Eve and Redi Tlhabi, he called in to give feedback.

Listen to the full conversation below:

My heart is inconsistent right now. I have been trying to find words to describe how I am feeling.

Patrick

I actually just realised how lonely I have been because I have been in denial about my loneliness ever since it happened.

Patrick

He says the available date for the psychiatrist is on the 9th of May but because he is still a student he has to wait for his exams time table to be able to confirm the appointment.

I am incomplete and I could do with all the help I could get, I just want to forget about this and live again

Patrick

Dr Eve says Patrick is not the only one going through Developmental Trauma Disorder but there are a whole lot of people dealing with the trauma of childhood abuse.

I was inundated with cries, pleas and desperation from so many people who had heard our show and could no longer bear with the intolerable pain that they are sitting with
