The City of Cape Town has redeployed its Stabilisation Unit on the streets of Manenberg, following violent battles between rival gangs.
The unit, which proved to be successful in curbing crime in recent months, was assigned to other areas on the Cape Flats, explains the City Law Enforcement Director Robbie Roberts.
Gun battles between several rival gangs have left at least eight people dead in Manenberg over the weekend.
We redeployed our Stabilisation Unit members back to the area in order to get stability there.— Robbie Roberts, Director of Law Enforcement in the City of Cape Town
According to Roberts, the Gang and Drug Task Team, a collaboration between metro police, traffic enforcement and the South African Police Service (Saps), will also strengthen its presence in the community at this time.
He says the City and Saps are planning to work closely to create an integrated approach to fighting gang violence.
