University fees: Taxing the wealthy should not be dismissed

Dr Ingrid Tufvesson, Chairperson of the Higher Education Transformation Network (HETN), says the notion of taxing the rich to fund higher education should not be dismissed before being tested.

She was talking to #NightTalk's Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo, following the comments made by Wits University vice-chancellor, Professor Adam Habib, that taxing the wealthy will probably not work.

Habib was speaking at the Serious Social Investing Conference at the Gordon Institute of Business Science on Tuesday.

Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande has previously said that the wealthy should be taxed to fund the country’s higher education sector.
