Following listeners concerns on communication towers that are erected within residential areas, John Maytham spoke to Councillor Johan van der Merwe, Economic, Environment and Spatial Planning.
According to Cllr van der Merwe, there is no way a communication tower can be erected without following proper procedures.
He says an application should be made to council and a public advert need to be released, through media and other plartforms, in which residents are notified about the erection of a mast.
Residents are then given a chance to comment, and those comments are taken back to the applicant for consideration.
He says that when making a decision, they have to take into consideration the health risk that the mast might cause, like exposure to radiation.
Based on telecommunication demands, Cllr van der Merwe says they have been receiving a lot of applications.
