New Beginnings: The love of trail running and breaking new ground

South African trail runner, Ryan Sandes chats to CapeTalk’s Pippa Hudson about his new beginning, a new book called TrailBlazer – My Life as an ultra-Distance Trail Runner.

In 2010 he became the first competitor to have won all four of the 4 Deserts races - the Atacama Desert in Chile, the Gobi Desert in China, the Sahara Desert in Egypt, and lastly Antarctica.

Talking to Pippa Hudson, Sandes explains how he started on his trail running journey, winning endurance trail running events on every single continent.

Listen to the full conversation on The Pippa Hudson Show:

I am very passionate about the sport of trail running, being active and living a dream

Ryan Sandes, trail runner

For me running never came naturally, it wasn’t something I aspired to. At school I always dreamed of becoming a springbok rugby player

Ryan Sandes, trail runner

When he moved to Cape Town, Sanders says he befriended guys who were into trail running so he joined in and to his surprise he became good at it.
