In a controversial spin, the son of African National Congress (ANC) stalwarts has been nominated as the Democratic Alliance (DA's) mayoral candidate in Ekurhuleni for this year’s municipal elections.
Ghaleb Cachalia says that he left the ANC because the ruling party has abandoned its people.
We've watched our values being reduced to rhetoric by the ANC, our painful history being exploited as a tool to divide South Africans. We've seen corruption run rampant.— Ghaleb Cachalia, DA mayoral candidate in Ekurhuleni
He explains that the decision was not taken lightly, adding that he consulted with family members and thought long and hard about the move.
Cachalia says that he plans to run for the position to help put an end to the ANC's downward spiral.
The ANC... has had a record that has driven us down a path that I am not proud of. I've done much introspection to come to a point where I've have said enough and no further. I've found a home; an ideological, practical and sound home that provides fairness, freedom and opportunity.— Ghaleb Cachalia, DA mayoral candidate in Ekurhuleni
He strongly believes that the opposition party has a fighting chance in the Gauteng municipality.
