ANC MP calls for the removal of Springbok emblem from the national team’s jersey

ANC MP, Strike Ralegoma called for the removal of the Springbok emblem from the national rugby team’s jersey at the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee meeting on sport and recreation.

Ralekgoma suggested that all national teams must play with a single emblem in order to achieve transformation.

He also mentioned that all other national sports teams use the Protea as their emblem, except rugby.

CapeTalk’s Pippa Hudson spoke to EWN Sports anchor, Jeremy Harris to share his views about the removal of the Springbok emblem.

Listen to the full conversation below:

Harris says that most rugby player’s dream is to be part of the Springboks and to wear the colours and the Springbok emblem. He says this won’t be an overnight decision because there is a lot to be considered

There is a lot of value and credibility attached to the springbok’s emblem and logo

Jeremy Harris, EWN Sports anchor

Removing the emblem would be a sad farewell but it will mean ultimately nothing to the players who will pull on the green and gold jersey

Jeremy Harris, EWN Sports anchor

They will, overtime, move on from the springbok tagline to the Proteas tagline and for them the thrill and the honour of calling themselves a national team will be the ultimate goal
