With the help of The Huntington’s Association of South Africa, Pippa Hudson looks into a devastating genetic condition called Huntington’s Disease.
By shining a light on this disease, we hope to help break the stigma attached to it, and increase public awareness and knowledge around this condition.
Huntington’s Disease is a neuro-degenerative condition that affects both body and mind, resulting in a gradual decline in both cognitive abilities and muscle co-ordination.
Pippa Hudson speaks to Huntington’s Association of South Africa representative Thelma Naude as well as Tarryn Shaw, Medical Intern and a genetic councillor at UCT.
Listen to the full conversation on The Pippa Hudson Show:
Tarryn gives three symptoms of Huntington’s Disease as:
- Uncontrollable muscle movements
- Emotional and behavioural characteristics
- Loss of thinking ability
She says there is currently no cure for this disease, but only treatment available to help manage symptoms such as anxiety and movement disorder.
