"Skin lightening can cause irreversible damage to your skin"

Rapper Lil Kim recently posted pictures of her notably lighter face on _Instagram, _reviving the debate about the dangers of skin lightening procedures and products.

Last year, Professor Nonhlanhla Khumalo, head of the Skin Research Lab at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Groote Schuur Hospital, warned that a large amount of skin products sold illegally in Cape Town contained hazardous and illegal ingredients.

Lester Davids, Professor of Cell Biology at UCT says that skin lightening products elements which can cause irreversible damage to one's skin.

Professor Davids spoke to #NightTalk's Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo about the impact of skin lightening products on the skin.
