Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula on Monday said he would revoke the privileges of some sporting federations if they fail to meet transformation targets.
Mbalula announced that SA Rugby, Athletics South Africa, Netball SA and Cricket South Africa have had their rights to host international tournaments taken away.
EWN's Sports editorJean Smyth says that the lack of prior consultation with the sports bodies would put them in an awkward situation.
He recognises that the drastic decision is Mbalula's way of putting his foot down, but believes the announcement could have been approached differently.
He's also thinking that he needs to draw a line under something at some point. At what point do you say this isn't happening fast enough; and at what point do you take radical action.— Jean Smyth, EWN sports editor
According to Smyth, Mbalula should have spoken to the sporting bodies before making the announcement.
He says that transformation is the greatest challenge facing all sporting codes.
