ANC stalwart Mathews Phoza says it's time for Zuma to step down

During a discussion hosted at Constitutional Hill yesterday. Mathews Phoza was asked if he believed Jacob Zuma should do an introspection and leave office after what was pronounced at the Constitutional Court.

Charlotte Kilbane, standing in for Stephen Grootes, asked Phoza if this was an accurate statement of what he had said.

I said certainly yes, because it is not just a question of being legally liable, but morally and politically liable, and taking responsibility for your actions and your omissions.

I think we have reached a point where it is about the interests of the country, not just the interests of the ANC or the interests of Zuma

Mathews Phoza, ANC stalwart

Phoza says it is a wrong precedent to set for President Zuma to be in contravention of the Constitution, and then do nothing about it.

It is the moral responsibility of president Zuma to step down.

Phoza says there are many within the ANC who feel it is time for Zuma to relinquish office. He added that those who support the President are in alignment with him through business deals which he says "are not very kosher".

He says some of those defending him so vigorously are involved n Nkandla debacle.

I don't take them very seriously, and I would not waste my airtime on them. We must look seriously at what the people of South Africa are saying. What is the national consciousness about this matter/ It is that Zuma must go.

The honorouble thing to do is take responsibility and walk with integrity if there is anything left.
