High Court suspends the Bobroffs from practicing as attorneys

Judges at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria made a suspension judgment, ruling that personal injury lawyer Ronald Bobroff and his son Darren Bobroff be suspended from practicing as attorneys and conveyancers of the court.

The Bobroffs were charged on fraud and money laundering concerns, which relate to suspected infringements in the handling of Road Accident Fund (RAF) claims.

The case is pending the determination of the applications of the Law Society and the Grahams (as first and second applicants) to strike the Bobroff's from the roll of attorneys.

The Grahams lodged a complaint of overcharging with the Law Society of the Northern Provinces against the Bobroff's.

According to George van Niekerk, Director at ENS Africa, who also acted on behalf of the Graham’s), the Grahams went to the Bobroff’s after Matthew Graham was injured in an accident. They wanted the Bobroff's to pursue a claim against the road accident fund on their behalf.

Listen to the full conversation below:

The Bobroff’s collected a payment from the Road accident fund and picked a fee of 40% of what they collected.

That was way above the prescribed limit, the limit prescribed in the Contingency Fees Act

George van Niekerk, Director at ENS Africa

It became clear to us that the Bobroff’s were systematically overreaching their clients, in other words they were stealing from their clients under the guise of taking fees.

George van Niekerk, Director at ENS Africa

Van Niekerk says the Bobroff's have taken an estimated amount of R500 000 from the Graham's claim. He says it took them about five years to get to the point where the Bobroff's finally got a suspension.
