Its against the law to take a selfie in the polling booth

You may not take a selfie in the polling booth of yourself - or your completed ballot paper and post online. Sy Mamabolo, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer for Electoral Operations at IEC, explains why.

The Constitution demands that people cast their votes in secret. By so doing, it protects the ability to vote for whomever they so desire.

We have had instances in the past, where farm workers were told how to vote, and take a picture of the ballot so they could give it to the boss....So we believe that is a fundamental negation of the right to vote and to vote for whomever you wish to vote for.

Sy Mamabolo, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer for Electoral Operations at IEC

It should not be encourages for anyone to take a selfie of the marked ballot.

Obviously we are not a police force, and we cannot police all instances of these occurrences, so we urge our voters to respect the Constitution's imperative for a secret ballot.

Mamabolo also referred to instances where women and children have been told who to vote for by men in the household and ordered to bring back photographic evidence of the marked ballot. This is the kind of problem the IEC wishes to avoid happening.
