What’s the experience of being a foreigner in South Africa?

Friday Stand In, Lovelyn Nwadeyi was born in Nigeria and moved to South Africa at a very tender age.

Her family then lived in Queenstown in the Eastern Cape. She did most of her schooling in South Africa, from primary school, right through to her studies at the University of Stellenbosch.

She asked CapeTalk/ 702 listeners to share their experiences of being a foreigner in South Africa in light of all the xenophobic attacks happening in the country.

She says, growing up, she has always felt discouraged by the kind of attitudes South Africans display towards foreigners, especially towards other African people.

I am Congolese and I’ve been in South Africa for 23 years, and I feel a lot of xenophobia is based on black people in South Africa not being educated about the role of the rest of Africa in the liberation.

I often hear people in South Africa talk about 'those people from Africa'
