Get ready... red meat prices are set to hike

Consumers must brace themselves for a steep price hike on red meat in coming months, according to experts.

The National Red Meat Producers' Organisation believes that retailers will increase costs from between 22-30%, meanwhile, economists predict as much as 60%.

Pieter Prinsloo, Vice Chair of the organisation, has urged consumers to be wise with their purchases of lamb, mutton and beef.

Pull together with the family and buy a carcass, instead of just cuts.

He suggests that consumers plan their meet purchases and by their cuts in bulk.

Prinsloo says that drought, maize prices, high exports, and inflation all have an effect on the costs of local meat.
