TECHNOBYE for 09 May 2016

Last week I attended the EMC World conference in Las Vegas where I got a glimpse into where the future of doing business and technology is going. The key message to business is modernise, transform and digitise. Michael Dell who recently made the announcement that Dell would be acquiring EMC for $67 billion said in his keynote address that the world of technology is moving at an incredible pace. Dell said tht by 2031 we will be able to sequence a genome in 94 seconds, for $1. Download the entire library of congress in 3 minutes. 50% of cars on the road will be driverless. By 2031, the number of connected devices will reach 200 billion.

If you are looking for a way to start being active with a cool way of monitoring your movements and sleep then check out the new FitBit Alta. It tracks your steps, distance, calories burned, active minutes, hourly activity and stationary time. The cool thing about the Alta is it recognizes and records your exercises without you touching a button. It knows for example if you go for a run. Battery life is excellent at five days. The FitBit Alta does not have a GPS or heart rate monitor so it will appeal to those who take their exercises seriously.

If you are looking for a great book that gives you a glimpse into the jobs of the future then grab Martin Ford’s book called “The Rise of the Robots”. In his book Ford provides evidence that technology is having and will have a tremendous impact on future jobs. Some will become obsolete others will be created but overall we are losing more jobs than we are gaining.
