Improve your Life: What does it really mean to be courageous?

Simon Ekin, trainer and thought-leader on the subject of courage describes courage as ‘doing anything outside our comfort zone’.

Most of the time we do things we are comfortable with unless circumstances forces us to do things that are difficult

Simon Ekin, Author and Professional speaker

Talking to CapeTalks Pippa Hudson, Ekin explained his first courageous move.

He was on a bus in London and he says everyone on the bus was awfully quiet, minding their own business. And in that quietness he says he got up from his seat and started making a speech to strangers.

Listen to the full conversation below:

It was absolutely terrifying but it went really well. I started by saying 'good evening ladies and gentleman, it is very quiet in here isn’t it?

Simon Ekin, Author and Professional speaker

One thing I have discovered about courage is that we get so fearful and we think there is this big monster but the moment we look at it, it kind of shrinks into something manageable

Simon Ekin, Author and Professional speaker

I believe we all have this incredible resource and strength within us but we don’t put ourselves in situations where we really draw on it.

Simon Ekin, Author and Professional speaker

Ekin is a teacher, professional speaker, facilitator and the author of The Art of Courage, a book about his life’s journey and how he confronted his fears, experiencing the power of courage.

He will be speaking at the annual Psychology Festival of Learning, hosted by The South African College of Applied Psychology (SACAP) at their Cape Town Campus on 26 and 27 September.
