The University of Johannesburg (UJ) have begun an investigation into the overnight arson attack which destroyed the Sanlam Auditorium at the Kingsway Campus.
UJ's Deputy Vice-Chancellor Mpho Letlape estimates that the destruction will cost approximately R 100 million to repair.
UJ confirmed that the auditorium was burnt down to the ground, in addition to computer labs which were damaged.
Inside, the 1000 seater auditorium has been completely gutted. Upstairs, there are computer labs which have also been damaged.— Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter
EWN's Gia Nicolaides says the area has been cordoned off as fire investigators remain on the scene.
Their main responsibility right now is to find out how [the fire] was started and who is responsible.— Gia Nicolaides, EWN reporter
According to Nicolaides, UJ management believe that a small group of unruly criminals set the auditorium alight at 2 AM.
