Family Matters: Teaching children the importance of perseverance

Perseverance is the ability to have self-discipline to continue with a task, in spite of being confronted with difficulties.

According to Lynne Arbuckle, principal of Riverside College Primary School, perseverance is a skill that can be learned, and parents can teach their children how to develop it.

We live in a world where everything is at our fingertips, where everything is convenient. We try to make life as easy as possible for our children and we don't try to encourage them to struggle through their difficulties...

Lynne Arbuckle, principal of Riverside College Primary School

Listen to the full conversation below:

When you see a child struggling, instead of swooping in to help them and solve the problem, you need to show them how to work through it.

Lynne Arbuckle, principal of Riverside College Primary School

Arbuckle says that when parents hurry into solving problems for their children, they are not equipping them with life skills for future use.

It doesn't matter at what age you are, everybody needs to have perseverance.
