The South African Deep Sea Trawling Industry Association (SADSTIA) has partnered with WWF South Africa (WWF-SA), to save at least 12 non-target fish species that are caught alongside hake in the offshore trawl fishery.
Dr Johann Augustyn, South African Deep-Sea Trawling Association says the focus of this partnership is to also know more about the other species of fish that are caught alongside hake and classify them.
Those species some of them are not green and we want to try and improve the status by gathering more information about those species, doing some additional stock assessments on them making sure that they are sustainable.— Dr Johann Augustyn, South African Deep-Sea Trawling Association
As part of their conservation assignment to improve the management of non-target species, Dr Augustyn says that they will make sure that the fishing trawls avoid areas were the endangered fish spawn.
