Durban closes four beaches due to medical waste washing on shore

In eThekwini in Durban officials are still picking up medical waste that washed up onto four beaches around the city.

Desmond Desar Spokesperson for South African Durban Community Environmental alliance and KZN substance fishers talks to Stephen Grootes about this issue.

Medical waste is something that is very costly. You have to autoclave it, to clean it..and the needles are especially costly to dump it in a proper prepared hazardous landfill site.

Desar says since government has clamped down on legislation, there has been an increase in illegal dumping activity.

This latest dumping could be carried out by anyone, from trucking companies to hospitals or clinics.

It will harm the potential Blue Flag status of Durban's beaches, he says, and damage tourism.

Limited resources is making it harder to monitor this illegal dumping. He says it should lead to jail time, not just a fine.

He urges the city to launch an investigation.

If a child plays with medical waste on a beach, you could be giving them a death sentence.
